SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (November 6, 2008) — In a “ruby red” themed ceremony celebrating romance, Princess Cruises today named its newest ship, Ruby Princess.  America’s reigning reality couple, Trista and Ryan Sutter of The Bachelorette did the honors, breaking the traditional bottle of champagne to mark the ship’s launch, and their own fifth anniversary.  The new godparents were surrounded by hundreds of guests decked out in ruby red-tie formal attire, and a ruby-haired singer serenaded the crowd.  As befitting the most romantic cruise line, and an event celebrating “romantic moments and milestones,” the official naming was followed by the ultimate romantic milestone – a wedding in the midst of the festivities.  The California couple joined in matrimony not only had Trista and Ryan as wedding attendants, but the Love Boat captain himself, Gavin MacLeod, gave away the bride.

Tonight the ship hosts a “Ruby Red Tie” gala and sets sail on a two-night cruise for hundreds of VIP guests who will enjoy a special preview of Princess’ newest vessel.  During the mini sailing, the ship will host an array of romantic activities, including a massive renewal of vows for all couples tomorrow while the ship is at sea.  Ruby Princess then returns to Port Everglades on November 8 for its inaugural seven-day sailing to the Western Caribbean.

“It’s only fitting that as the most romantic cruise line in the industry, we celebrate the naming of our newest ship with a tribute to ‘romantic milestones,’” said Alan Buckelew, Princess Cruises president and chief executive officer.  “It was exciting to have Trista and Ryan Sutter serve as godparents of Ruby Princess and of course the wedding during the ceremony added an appropriate touch to the festivities.”

Princess Cruises has long been associated with romance on the high seas, dating back to its days as the setting for the now-iconic TV show The Love Boat.  Cementing that connection, Princess was just named the “Best Cruise Line for Romance” and “Best Cruise Line for Weddings” in the 2008 Cruise Critic Editors’ Picks Awards.  The Ruby Princess naming ceremony continued the line’s tradition of romance with godparents Trista and Ryan, who were introduced to America in 2003 on the television hit The Bachelorette.

Trista and Ryan Sutter became America’s reigning romantic couple as millions of viewers followed their courtship and witnessed their nationally televised wedding.  To this day they are the only couple from the Bachelor or The Bachelorette shows to actually get married.

The ceremony fulfilled the dream of yet another couple as Kip Hickman and Danielle Vurpillat tied the knot as part of the ship’s naming ceremony.  The couple, from Dunsmuir, Calif., met on a blind date and expressed their desire to be married onboard Ruby Princess during a recent contest held with national newspaper, USA Today.  The minister who officiated the nuptials, Phil Roberts, is also a member of Princess Cruises’ Department of Romance.

The Ruby Princess naming ceremony will be available for viewing on line at www.princess.com beginning November 7.

The 3,080-passenger Ruby Princess includes a dramatic piazza-style atrium featuring small-bite eateries and an ever-changing line-up of street performers.  Passengers will also enjoy Princess’ other array of dining venues including the signature Sabatini’s Italian restaurant and the Crown Grill steak house, plus a relaxing oasis just for adults called The Sanctuary.  The new ship will also offer the many other innovations that define the Princess experience, including the popular Movies Under the Stars poolside movie screen, Personal Choice Dining featuring traditional or Anytime seating, multiple entertainment venues, a relaxing Asian-style Lotus Spa with fitness center, an extensive children and teen’s center, and a wedding chapel.

During Ruby Princess’ inaugural season she will make seven-day weekly sailings from Fort Lauderdale to the Western Caribbean.  Calls include Ocho Rios, Jamaica; Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands; Cozumel, Mexico and Princess Cays in the Bahamas.  Next spring the ship will move to Europe for 12-day sailings in the Mediterranean and Greek Islands.

(November 14, 2008) – Guests dreaming of fresh air and sweeping ocean vistas have a great opportunity to provide a free upgrade to a balcony stateroom.  Princess Cruises’ “Balcony Bonanza” offers a balcony for the price of an oceanview stateroom – representing a savings of up to $1,000 per cabin.

The Balcony Bonanza promotion applies to bookings made through December 15, 2008 on most 2009 summer sailings to Alaska, Europe and the Caribbean.  Alaska and Europe cruisetour bookings will also receive an additional $200 onboard credit per stateroom.

Princess Receives Three Top Honors in Porthole Readers’ Choice Awards

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (November 20, 2008) – Princess Cruises has received top honors in three categories of Porthole Cruise Magazine’s 2008 Annual Readers’ Choice Awards.  The line won Best Central American Itineraries, Best Australia/New Zealand Itineraries, and Best Onboard Shopping.

 

The awards represent the eighth year in a row that the line has been recognized in an itinerary category and the second year that Princess took top honors as having the best Central American itineraries.

 

“We’re very pleased that Porthole readers continue to think of Princess for itinerary excellence,” said Jan Swartz, Princess senior vice president.  “Princess ships have been traveling the globe for decades, and our experience has enabled us to create the very best itineraries.”

 

In 2009-10, Princess’ Central American itineraries will include a new “Two-day Canal Experience” on Panama Canal transits of 15 days or longer, featuring a second day in port so passengers can enjoy both the engineering wonder of the Canal and further discover the country of Panama.

 

Down Under, Princess will continue its program of Australia/New Zealand sailings with a series of cruises between Sydney and Auckland aboard Diamond Princess, plus two ships, Sun Princess and Dawn Princess, based in the region year round.

Season’s Best Alaska Shore Excursions Chosen by Princess Cruises Passengers

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (October 2, 2008) – As Princess Cruises wraps up another successful Alaska cruise season, the line has announced the winners of its ninth annual C.R.U.I.S.E. service awards, which recognize the best shore excursion experiences in Alaska and the Northwest as determined by Princess passengers.

 

 

The awards acknowledge the importance of local tour operators and their staff and the vital role they play in a passenger’s Alaska cruise experience.  The most popular tours, individual guides and dock representatives are determined by passenger surveys taken throughout the season, and are chosen from the extensive line-up of more than 200 Alaska shore excursion options offered on Princess ships.

 

 

“The Alaska tour operators we work with do a wonderful job of continuing Princess’ culture of service once passengers go ashore,” said Charlie Ball, president of Princess Tours.  “It’s always gratifying to receive so many positive comments about the experiences passengers have on their Alaska shore adventures.  These awards are to recognize and thank those who make the shore experience special for our visitors.”

 

 

The C.R.U.I.S.E. program is the longest running customer service program in the cruise industry.  The Alaska awards were begun in 2000 and cap off a season-long effort to recognize the role that Alaskan-owned tour partners play in passengers’ cruise experiences.  Tour Guide of the Season and Dock Representative of the Season award winners receive $100, a letter of commendation, a plaque, a ship tour and lunch onboard with their family.  Operators of the Shore Excursion of the Season receive a plaque and a letter of commendation, a tour of the ship, and lunch onboard for company officials.

Star Princess Emerges from Drydock With New Signature Features

Passengers Can Now Enjoy a New “Piazza” with International Café
and Vines, plus Adults Only Sanctuary and Movies Under the Stars

 SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (October 13, 2008) – Star Princess set sail this weekend after a three-week drydock that dramatically transformed several spaces onboard, including turning the ship’s atrium into a vibrant street café-like piazza, adding the company’s signature adults-only retreat called The Sanctuary, and installing a 300-square-foot Movies Under the Stars poolside screen.

These features, which have been enthusiastically enjoyed by passengers on Princess Cruises’ newest vessels, have inspired an expansion to other ships in the fleet, and Star Princess is the first to be revitalized with these favorite elements.

Star Princess’ updated pizza-style atrium will now feature an array of dining and entertainment opportunities including the specialty coffees, freshly baked goods, paninis, salads and tapas of the International Café.  It will also introduce an expanded Vines wine bar concept, which will feature more than 30 wines by the glass, a selection of artisan meats and cheeses, plus a wine shop where passengers can purchase their favorite bottle.

On the top deck of the ship, passengers can now relax in the tranquil environment of The Sanctuary, Princess’ signature adults-only retreat featuring plush padded lounge chairs and the services of dedicated Serenity Stewards.  Along with enjoying refreshing beverages and light snacks, visitors to this exclusive space can also receive a massage in one of two private cabanas.

Princess’ trademark Times Square-style Movies Under the Stars poolside screen is now in place and will show a variety of films, concerts and special events daily.  And in the evenings it becomes an outdoor theater with specially covered lounge chairs and cozy blankets, where moviegoers can enjoy free popcorn, plus other snacks and beverages.

Additional changes made during the drydock include a new Internet Café and library area, enhancements to the onboard boutiques, the addition of LCD flat screen televisions in all staterooms, and a variety of other cosmetic updates.

Star Princess is the first of three ships to receive these updates.  Caribbean Princess and Golden Princess will also receive similar transformations in subsequent drydocks, in January and April of 2009, respectively.  Caribbean Princess and Golden Princess will also receive additional enhancements including a new Crown Grill steak and seafood restaurant, a new casino area and six additional suites.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (October 14, 2008) – With the conclusion of Princess Cruises’ Alaska cruisetour season, the company has announced the winners of its second annual C.R.U.I.S.E. service awards for the top land excursions from each major interior location.

Winning tours are chosen from among Princess’ extensive line-up of more than 120 land excursion options offered to cruisetour passengers from Princess’ exclusive riverside Alaska wilderness lodges as well as the cities of Anchorage and Fairbanks.

The winning tours include the Explore Anchorage City Tour (Anchorage Museum & Sourdough Mining Co.) from Anchorage; Dog Sled Demonstration and Ride (Chugach Outfitters) from Copper River Princess Wilderness Lodge; Denali Fly Fishing Tour (Denali Fly Fishing Guides) from Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge; Alaskan Hummer Tour (Alaskan Hummer Tours) from Fairbanks; Kenai Canyon River Rafting (Alaska Rivers Company) from Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge; and Trapper Creek Homestead Tour (Janel Porterfield) from Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge.

The awards, which are primarily based upon feedback from Princess’ tour participants, recognize that local excursion providers are a vital part of visitors’ Alaska cruisetour experiences.

Ruby Princess Delivered by Shipyard Today; Sets Sail for Florida

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (October 23, 2008) – The newest addition to the Princess fleet, Ruby Princess, was delivered to Princess Cruises today in Monfalcone, Italy by the ship’s builder, Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani.  The 3,070-passenger vessel has set sail for Fort Lauderdale where she is scheduled to arrive on November 4.

The ship will be christened on November 6 by celebrity couple Trista and Ryan Sutter from ABC’s hit reality series, The Bachelorette.  In keeping with the launch’s “romantic milestones” theme, Princess will help the duo celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary.

Ruby Princess will debut a number of new services and amenities on board, including new dining options such as a pub lunch in the Wheelhouse Bar, unique enrichment programs and the new Ultimate Ship Tour.  The vessel also includes a dramatic piazza-style atrium featuring small-bite eateries and an ever-changing array of performing street entertainers, Princess’ signature adults-only oasis called The Sanctuary, Sabatini’s Italian restaurant, Crown Grill seafood and steak house, “Movies Under the Stars” giant outdoor movie screen, and Hearts & Minds wedding chapel.

Ruby Princess will then set sail on her maiden voyage from Fort Lauderdale on November 8, beginning a program of Western Caribbean sailings taking passengers to Ocho Rios, Grand Cayman, Cozumel and Princess Cays.  Following her inaugural Caribbean season, the ship will offer a program of Mediterranean voyages in summer 2009.

Ruby Princess Godparents Trista and Ryan Sutter Select Grand-Prize Winner for “Romance on the Ruby” Contest

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (October 24, 2008) — Proving that romance is alive and well, Princess Cruises and USA TODAY received more than 6,600 entries for their “Romance on the Ruby” cruise contest, which asked people to share their favorite romantic moment or milestone for a chance to win a getaway aboard Princess’ newest ship, Ruby Princess. From a pool of 10 finalists, one grand-prize winner was chosen today by Ruby Princess godparents Trista and Ryan Sutter, of the hit television reality series The Bachelorette.

The Sutters selected Susan Custer of Battle Ground, Wash. to receive a seven-day cruise aboard Ruby Princess. Custer and the other finalists will join the ship for the two-day inaugural celebrations, which include attending the naming ceremony on November 6 and setting sail on a mini cruise.

“We were so touched by the heartfelt entries and by these couples’ years of love and dedication,” said Trista Sutter, “so it was really difficult to choose just one. But overall, we felt that Susan’s romantic story really captured the theme of the contest. Ryan and I are looking forward to meeting Susan and her husband, John, to congratulate them in person aboard Ruby Princess.”

The thousands of entries included stories about memorable first meetings, romantic proposals, and unique celebrations of milestone occasions. Custer’s entry tells the story of how the man who was to become her second husband showed his love for her by surprising her with a new ring that combined stones from her first wedding ring from her late husband with new stones from him. “He had the jeweler put together a special ring from the two ‘loves’ of my life,” she said. They look forward to their Ruby Princess sailing as an opportunity to celebrate their upcoming second anniversary.

As the cruise line that has long embodied romance, Princess selected Trista and Ryan as christeners to help celebrate their milestone fifth wedding anniversary during the ship’s naming. The couple became romance royalty in 2003 as America followed their courtship and witnessed their nationally televised wedding. To this day they are the only couple from the The Bachelor or The Bachelorette shows to actually get married.

Custer was among the finalists voted as favorites by Princess Cruises’ Department of Romance members who include actor Gavin MacLeod, The Love Boat’s “Captain Stubing;” Dr. Ruth Westheimer, the always-provocative couples therapist; Alex Michel, the first Bachelor on ABC’s hit show; Trish McDermott, vice president of love at Engage.com; and Lisa Light, destination wedding expert and author.

“Movies Under the Stars” to Make A Splash Across Princess Fleet; Popular Poolside Theater to Be Added to Additional Ships

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (November 5, 2008) – Princess’ signature “Movies Under the Stars” poolside screens have become such a popular feature since debuting in 2004, that the line will add the dramatic 300-square-foot movie screens feature to most of the fleet over the next several years. Princess was the first cruise line to introduce this unique entertainment experience aboard its ships and Movies Under the Stars has subsequently revolutionized movie-watching at sea.

In addition, this month select ships featuring Movies Under the Stars screens will be broadcasting a cruise industry exclusive concert from number-one-selling recording artist Josh Groban. The “Awake Live” performance will join other popular concerts shown on the ships, and will also offer the unique opportunity for those who enjoy the presentation to purchase a DVD/CD of the concert at the ship’s boutiques.

Movies Under the Stars, which shows movies, concerts, sporting events and other special programming throughout the day and evening, will be installed aboard Golden Princess (May 2009), Dawn Princess (June 2009), Coral Princess (October 2009), Sun Princess (April 2010), Island Princess (October 2010), Diamond Princess (November 2010), and Sapphire Princess (2011).

The movie screens have been a focal point on Princess ships since first debuting on Caribbean Princess in 2004. They are now featured on Crown Princess, Emerald Princess, Ruby Princess, Grand Princess, Star Princess and Sea Princess. The giant LED (Light Emitting Diode) screen is more than 300 square feet in size with a 69,000-watt sound system and has sufficient lighting power to be seen clearly at mid-day and heard even while the ship is moving at full speed – offering passengers a movie experience comparable to the best shoreside movie theater.

In addition to movies, passengers can enjoy a variety of special program on the giant screen, including sporting events such as the Super Bowl and the college football Bowl Championship Series, Academy Awards, video game contests with Nintendo’s Wii, a variety of event concerts with artists such as Tina Turner and Elton John, and even midnight showings of cult films such as “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

Princess Cruises Ships to Broadcast Historic Presidential Inauguration on January 20

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (January 14, 2009) – Expected to be one of the most widely watched presidential inaugurations in history, the swearing-in of President-elect Barack Obama will be televised live on most Princess Cruises ships on January 20.  Passengers will be able to follow live coverage of the historic inauguration ceremony through CNN International’s all-day broadcast of the event.

Vessels will be broadcasting all key events throughout the day, including the oath of office and the presidential walk down Pennsylvania Avenue.  Ships will show the events in public rooms or on Movies Under the Stars aboard those vessels with the poolside screens.  Special viewing parties will offer the opportunity to celebrate with themed food and drinks, plus give passengers the opportunity to test their knowledge with a presidential trivia contest, featuring tote bags from CNN International for the winners.

Throughout the voyage, ships will also be showing a special biography on President-elect Barack Obama and other presidential documentaries, as well as movies such as “The American President” and “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.”

“We recognize the intense interest in the inauguration events this year,” said Jan Swartz, Princess executive vice president.  “We regularly broadcast ‘don’t miss’ television events for passengers, and this significant ceremony certainly fits with our dedication to providing these memorable viewing opportunities.”

During the January 20^th inauguration, Princess passengers will be sailing around the globe, with ships cruising in the Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, South America, Australia and New Zealand, and on world cruises.

The presidential inauguration is not the only upcoming special viewing opportunity on Princess cruise ships.  Shortly thereafter passengers will also be able to watch coverage of Super Bowl XLIII on February 1 and the 81^st Academy Awards on February 22.

Seven ships currently offer Movies Under the Stars screens, which have been a focal point on Princess ships since first debuting on Caribbean Princess in 2004.  They are now featured on Crown Princess, Emerald Princess, Ruby Princess, Grand Princess, Star Princess and Sea Princess.  The giant LED screen is more than 300 square feet in size with a 69,000-watt sound system and has sufficient lighting power to be seen clearly at mid-day and heard even while the ship is moving at full speed – offering cruise passengers a movie experience comparable to the best shoreside movie theater.  Other special programs presented on the giant screen include sporting events such as the college football Bowl Championship Series, video game contests with Nintendo’s Wii, a variety of event concerts with artists such as Christina Aguilera and Josh Groban, and even midnight showings of cult films such as “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

Princess Ships Prepare for a Festive Season at Sea

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (December 1, 2008) – As the holidays draw near, Princess ships are preparing for another festive season at sea, and weather conditions are again pointing to unusual snow flurries onboard. After an extremely popular debut last year, snow will again magically fall in the ship’s atriums, transforming the vessels into a winter wonderland throughout December.

 

“What’s better than the romance of a white Christmas, especially when it’s an unexpected surprise?” said Jan Swartz, Princess senior vice president. “Our snowfalls were such a huge hit last year that this has now become a new tradition on Princess ships.”

 

The innovative snow-making process creates falling flakes that vanish on contact, letting passengers enjoy the excitement of snow flurries without the need to bundle up. Princess’ daily snowfall will occur on all ships except for the lines’ three small vessels – Pacific Princess, Tahitian Princess and Royal Princess – which do not have large, multi-story atriums.

 

Even when the snow isn’t coming down, Princess ships will feature a merry atmosphere. Vessels are decked out in holiday décor – even including a Christmas tree on the vessels’ masts – and strolling carolers fill the air with the sounds of the season.  

 

Passengers can once again participate in a “gingerbread challenge,” where teams test their holiday housebuilding skills in a fun-filled competition to construct the most creative gingerbread structure.  Or they can test their holiday craft skills by creating a personalized photo ornament.  And new this year is a turkey-carving demonstration from the onboard culinary experts to prepare passengers to do the honors at their next holiday feast.

 

Special events also include a reading of “The Night Before Christmas” by either the captain or cruise director, and a holiday variety show adds a seasonal element to the ship’s entertainment offerings. For those who can’t get enough of Christmas carols, the ships’ Princess Pop Star talent show will feature a holiday edition where competitors can croon their favorite seasonal songs.

 

Religious services are held as well, and passengers can attend midnight mass or an inter-denominational church service performed by onboard clergy. Passengers will receive a stocking turndown gift and can enjoy classic holiday films or even relax in front of a traditional burning Yule log … on their stateroom television!

 

Holiday Feasts – Each Princess ship’s culinary team will delight the senses with spectacular holiday displays and will serve up several delicious feasts. A sumptuous Christmas brunch includes complimentary eggnog. On Christmas Day, passengers will sit down to a dinner of traditional holiday fare including roast turkey and all the trimmings.  Freshly prepared stolen and Christmas cookies (even some for Santa) round out the seasonal treats.

 

Christmas For Children – Junior cruisers can count down to the big day with special holiday activities. Santa Claus makes an appearance with his sack full of toys, and a fun-filled holiday fair in the atrium offers youngsters the opportunity to try their hand at Christmas cookie decorating, balloon making, face painting, games and other competitions. The youth centers will host holiday parties for each age group, and kids can make decorations to display on the center’s Christmas tree. Youngsters can get creative with other holiday-themed arts and crafts projects throughout the cruise, and they will have an opportunity to sing Christmas carols for passengers. For parents who want to stay up later to celebrate the holidays, free late-night group kid sitting sessions will be available on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

 

Hanukkah – Ships will also offer festivities for passengers celebrating the Festival of Lights. A special area of the ship is reserved for those participating in Hanukkah events and ships will display menorahs and fresh flower arrangements decorated in blue, silver and white. Children will enjoy themed arts and crafts pertinent to the holiday.

 

Happy New Year – Passengers will ring in a fun-filled 2009 with festive New Year’s Eve parties, complete with music, confetti, noise-makers and a balloon drop to count down to the new year. Earlier in the evening, the dinner menu will feature special treats just for New Year’s Eve. On New Year’s Day, football fans will be pleased to know they won’t miss the holiday’s traditional college bowl games, as the telecasts will be shown (as available by satellite) in a shipboard lounge or on some vessels’ giant Movies Under the Stars top-deck screen.

Princess Captain’s Circle Introduces New Opportunity for Suite Passengers and

 

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (December 12, 2008) – The Princess Captain’s Circle has introduced a new way to determine membership levels that will allow some passengers to more quickly reach the program’s higher Platinum and Elite membership levels.  The loyalty program will now count “cruise credits” instead of number of sailings, and passengers who travel in full suites and those who pay a single supplement will receive double cruise credits for their sailings — making them eligible for greater benefits with fewer cruises.

The new cruise credits program is effective for all sailings on or after December 7, 2008.  All passengers who complete a cruise will receive one cruise credit, and in the following cases, passengers will receive double credit or more:

•       Passengers who pay for and occupy a full suite (mini-suites excluded), will receive two cruise credits. 

•       Passengers who pay the single occupancy fare and travel alone in their cabin will receive two cruise credits.

•       Passengers who pay the single supplement to occupy a full suite on their own will receive three cruise credits.

“Many of our Circle members have suggested that it would be nice to find a way to recognize passengers who travel in suites and those who pay a single supplement,” said Jan Swartz, Princess senior vice president.  “We regularly look to our members for new ideas, and we think this new cruise credits program is a great way to give some extra benefits to those who do invest more in their cruises.”

Widely recognized as the leading loyalty program in the cruise industry, the Princess Captain’s Circle is unique in that it recognizes both cruise credits for number of sailings as well as total cruise days — whichever is most beneficial to the passenger.  Only cruise credits are multiplied for suite and solo passengers, not cruise days.
